A district of marked contradictions, Rotherham is both renowned for its great industry as well as its beautiful farmland and peaceful countryside.
Once a thriving mining community, the area is now one of the biggest producers of steel, supplying aerospace and even racing cars worldwide. However, steel isn’t just found in large and global designs, it also plays an important role much closer to home in the manufacture of wood burning stoves.
Although some wood burning stoves are made out of cast iron, a large proportion are made out of steel, providing them with strength and durability to last for decades. Wood burning stoves in Rotherham are a common sight in rural areas but are equally becoming more popular in urban areas too. We take a look at five of the reasons why this type of heating is rapidly becoming so sought after.
A traditional wood burning stove
1) Self reliance
If you’re in a rural area, you will know only too well the problems which can leave you isolated and cut-off from your regular supplies. Whether it’s due to an issue with your own transport, or the roads becoming inaccessible, the outcome is the same. For these reasons, households in rural communities know the importance of being self-reliant wherever possible.
Unfortunately in recent years, this has been brought home to urban households too. In 2007 floods decimated Rotherham, closing schools, shops and roads as well as bringing the whole transport system to a standstill. Since 2007, the town has also experienced heavy snowfalls which whilst not having quite the same devastating effect as the floodwaters, has still left many households without supplies.
Having a wood burning stove means that even if the power supply to the house is cut off, you will still be able to make sure everyone is warm; provide hot water and even cook. It’s difficult to put a price on that kind of reassurance.
2) Green appeal
With Rotherham having so much heavy industry in parts, clogging up the area with more harmful smoke is something most people will want to avoid.
However, wood burning stoves have a net zero carbon footprint. This is because the carbon produced from burning is offset by the amount of carbon the tree absorbs from the atmosphere during its lifetime. And if the tree had been left to let nature take its course, harmful gases would have been released into the atmosphere from rotting wood. For this reason, burning wood for a fire is not considered to have any more of a detrimental effect.
Wood burners are particularly efficient, typically using around 80% of the energy from the fuel provided. This source of renewable energy compares very favourably against both a traditional open fire, as well as other forms of natural fuel sources including coal and gas.
3) More stable costs
Once you have your wood burner installed in your property, the only real on-going cost you will have is for your fuel. In many cases this can be found relatively cheaply, and in some rural locations can even be salvaged for free (check who owns the land before you do this).
You may have been considering gas, coal or even oil as an alternative. Whilst all have benefits and can be used very effectively, cost can be an issue. The price of oil has been extremely volatile in recent years, pushing higher as evidenced by rising costs in the price of petrol. Whilst most consumers find the increase at the petrol pumps hard to swallow, those relying on the ‘black gold’ for their home fuel needs have found themselves even more out of pocket.
Other forms of fossil fuel have also been moving higher and hitting customers where it hurts, with gas doubling in price since 2004. Ouch.
As wood is a renewable energy and much easier for individuals to source their own supply, it provides much greater control over price hikes and costs.
4) A thing of beauty
Whilst the practical benefits of wood burning stoves are undeniable, the sheer beauty of this form of heating shouldn’t be overlooked.
It’s difficult to make some forms of heating look pretty: electric fires and radiators never draw the eye in the same way that dancing flames do.
Wood burning stoves come in all shapes and sizes and there’s something to suit every house, cottage or flat, regardless of décor. Contemporary wood burning stoves offer a wide range of features including large viewing panes to see the beauty of the flames more clearly and fit with even the most modern furnishings. More traditional designs provide cast iron or steel bodies, cool touch handles and the classic elegance that everyone expects.
5) Warm as toast
There’s no doubt that central heating is a great modern invention and a wonderful way to keep the house warm but when it’s cold outside and you’ve just got home, it’s difficult to beat the heat from a real flame fire.
A wood burning stove offers that comforting warmth instantly and thawing out frosty noses, fingers and toes with a cup of tea, cocoa – or even a nip of something a tad stronger – is quick and easy. And the relief of being chilled to the bone and suddenly drenched in a warm glow from head to toe is simply indescribable….
Wood burning stoves offer the comfort and homely appeal of an open fire without any of the dangers, or the wasted energy that disappears up the chimney. Cheap to run, beautiful to look at and practical in the event of a disaster, it’s almost impossible to see why anyone would want to choose any other kind of heating!
