Every season we experience an influx of brand new home furnishing trends. One of the latest home furnishing trends to hit the scene is stylish, designer radiators. Theses radiators are unlike any you have seen before, available in a wide range of colours, shapes and sizes. In this article we will examine how designer radiators have changed and adapted over the years to become the fashionable home furnishings they are today.
The history of heating
The history of heating dates back to the Roman times where they started using central heating systems to heat their villas. The system was known as a ‘hypocaust’ and was basically a furnace which heated the air and conducted it through the flooring. By 1700, Russian engineers had begun designing water based systems for central heating and by 1830 steam-based heating systems were being installed in upper-class homes.
Although various people claim to have invented the radiator as we know it today, it is believed that the earliest form of the radiator was designed by Polish-born Franz San Galli between 1855 and 1857. By 1872 designer Nelson H Bundy had come up with the ‘Bundy Loop,’ a popular cast iron radiator that still influences the design of many radiators today.
A time for change
During Victorian times cast iron radiators were introduced and were viewed as a decorative item, rather than just a practical installation. Victorian-style cast iron radiators are still extremely popular today, with traditional home owners looking to complement their homes original features and contemporary home owners looking to give their modern homes a unique twist.
Radiators in the 20th century
During the 20th century steel radiators became a popular choice, especially in Britain where the steel industry was booming. The problem was that although steel radiators were smaller and more practical than cast iron radiators, they were also fairly ugly to look at. For this reason homeowners began painting their radiators and boxing them in using fancy surrounds. This was noticed by radiator designs who then decided to begin creating colourful designers radiators that would not only heat homes, but add a touch of luxury styling to them too.
Personalising a living space
Today designer radiators are often used by homeowners to personalise their living space. Rather than choosing simple stainless steel corrugated radiators, homeowners are now choosing colourful and creative designs that inject character and charm into their homes. Some designer radiators even look like artwork and are used as such in contemporary homes, adding the perfect blend of style and functionality.
Re-storing traditional features
Vintage is currently in-vogue therefore making it trendy for homeowners to re-store their homes back to their traditional designs. For this reason there has been a surge in Victorian style cast iron radiators and other period designs.
Mixing the old with the new
Another trend we have seen, that involves the use of designer radiators, is the blending of modern and traditional design features. Many contemporary home owners are now adding interest to their rooms by installing things like old cast iron radiators to create focal points and statement pieces.
Radiators have come a long way over the years, from being a simple heating appliance to a stylish design feature. Current design trends have created a stir around designer radiators which are now available in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes. Whether you are looking to liven up your traditional home with a contemporary radiator, or take your home back to its routes with a period design, choosing a designer radiator is a great way to add an interesting design element to your home.
