No matter how skilled or unskilled you are sometime in your lifetime you will be required to take on a DIY project. Whether it be painting the bathroom or merely re-hanging paintings, most of us will do some form of DIY around the home. Gardening and landscaping is a good start if you are not as skilled, it will build your confidence and as it’s in the garden nothing will really spoil. You may just have to make a few adjustments or start again which is annoying but is better than you practicing on your home and something falling down like the ceiling or a wall.
Everyone can join in the fun
Even people interested in crafting or furniture restoring have basic skills that can be used in other larger DIY projects, such as painting, sewing and the use of artistic flare, all of which are handy when, say, redecorating a room and making curtains or recovering soft furnishings.
But what about slightly larger projects such as building your children a tree house or a beautiful arbor to sit under and take in the view, could you manage that?
Some great and inspiring DIY projects
Create an amazing beach inspired look in the garden by placing a few pieces of driftwood and loads of sand to mimic the lazy days on holiday spent down by the sea. Add some carefully chosen grasses and other tough beach plantlife, coupled with a roaring fire and you have the perfect getaway right there in your back garden.
This is a lovely project for anyone with access to some old or basic furniture that has really seen better days. Take said item, sand down all old and loose paint (if it’s particularly old it may contain harmful lead or other unpleasant chemicals so research this first) or varnish (remember your dust mask), wash down and allow to dry. Then apply base coat or wood primer ready for the paint colour of your choice. To make the seat part use a good fire retardant furnishings foam and cover with your favourite fabric, fasten with fabric glue and upholstery tacks to secure in place and there you have your very own ottoman.
For the more experienced home DIY enthusiast, this pretty looking tiny home on wheels will wow anyone who sees it. First of all you need some sort of chassis with wheels, an old caravan base would probably do. Then as the pictures suggest build a wooden framed structure very similar to a shed or boathouse design, complete the outer shell with insulation, cedar boards and a lightweight roof. Windows and doors are then added to waterproof the tiny home on wheels. Then wiring and some sort of internal plumbing systems should be installed to make it liveable. The hard work comes when trying to work out what goes where in the design, as sleeping, sitting, eating, preparation and cooking areas are needed.
Finally add your favourite furnishings and trinkets. Hey presto, you have your very own tiny home on wheels.
Everything for the beginner to the advanced DIY enthusiast, so what is stopping you?
Go out and build something of your very own!
