Whilst marble worktops look extremely beautiful, they require tender loving care to keep them looking that way. Marble is known for being more porous than granite making it susceptible to scratching, pitting, cracking and staining. Due to this, it requires much more care and maintenance in order to keep it in a good condition. In this article we will share our tops tips for caring for your marble worktops.
Cleaning marble worktops
Although it can be tempting to purchase a multi-purpose cleaning product for your kitchen surfaces, it is important that you do not use it to clean your marble worktops. Marble suppliers recommend that you simply use a mild washing up liquid solution with water to clean your worktops. Abrasive cleaning products that contain strong chemicals can cause permanent damage and discolouration to your worktops. If you have found a cleaning product that claims to be safe to use on marble surfaces, be sure to test it out on a small hidden area first.
If you find that a stain has developed on your marble worktop, you will need to draw it out. In order to lift the stain you will need to create a paste made from bicarbonate of soda and water. Before you use the paste, blot the stain using a clean cloth to remove any excess liquid. You then need to cover it with the paste you have made and wrap the counter in cling film. Leave it for twenty four hours and you should find the stain has lifted, making it easy to wipe it away with soap and water.
Polishing your marble worktops
Marble suppliers recommend that you use a micro-fibre cloth to clean and polish your worktops. The great thing about micro-fibre cloths is that they are extremely soft, so you do not have to worry about them scratching your worktops. They will also give your worktops and beautiful shiny finish. Regular polishing will help to keep your marble worktops looking as good as they day you bought them!
Minimising permanent damage
In order to minimise the risk of permanent damage to your marble worktops, you will need to make sure that you clean up any spillages immediately. This will make sure that the liquid does not soak into the surface and cause stains. If you find that water splashes appear to be sinking into your worktops, you may need to re-seal them. Regular re-sealing will help to prevent stains from spoiling your marble worktops.
If you are preparing food on your work tops, you should avoid cutting directly onto them. Not only can you scratch your worktop by doing this, but damage your knives too! Cutting close to the wedge of a worktop could also cause the surface to chip.
We have already mentioned the damage that abrasive cleaning products can do to worktops, but acidic foods can also do the same thing. Avoid placing foods like tomatoes, lemons, strawberries and vinegar directly onto your marble work tops. You should also make sure that you always use mats and boards under hot dishes and cookware to prevent heat damage.
Marble worktops are a beautiful choice for both modern and traditional kitchens, but they do require a lot of care and maintenance in order to keep them in a good condition. If you want to ensure that you get your money’s worth out of your worktops, then it is essential to regularly clean them with soap and water and avoid using harmful chemical-based products. Polishing your worktops frequently will help to pro-long their shine and keep them looking as beautiful as the day you had them installed.
